If you are on a Mac then you can use the EPS right way, but in Windows, you need a graphic software like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw to open this file format. Layout applications, such as PageMaker, Quark, or Microsoft Word, will only be able to place an EPS file, not open it. EPS is a format that is available to both Mac and PC users. When you open an EPS which is saved from Illustrator in the same version or a newer version of Illustrator you get the transparency back, not because it is an EPS as EPS does not support transparency but because the Illustrator fork is included in that file which is used by Illustrator. You can open an Illustrator EPS and resave as PDF/AI. Let's make something clear: EPS does not (necessarily) equal Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Illustrator is really good at editing its own EPS files, but you'll have mixed results with anything else. Not all EPS vector images are compatible with Adobe. Jul 14, 2016 Should you only need a viewer, Preview on a Mac and Paint on Windows will suffice. You should open the EPS document in the software that is developed for vector graphics, because if you open an EPS document on your Mac in a different app, you will.

What is an EPS file?
An EPS file is a graphics file saved in the Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file format. It may contain 2D vector graphics, bitmap images, and text. EPS files also include an embedded preview image in bitmap format.
EPS files are often used to save artwork, such as logos and drawings. They are a common format used for transferring image data between different operating systems. The files are supported by several different drawing programs and vector graphic editing applications. You can convert EPS files to standard bitmap formats such as .PDF, .JPG, .PNG, and .TIFF using programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and CorelDRAW.
NOTE: Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 and later no longer supports EPS files. The EPS format is still supported by Adobe Photoshop.
